Chapter 143: So You Want to Die With Me
Hearing this, tears were about to spill from Zhu Yuan's eyes; a choked sound escaped through her chattering teeth: "Are you fucking going to save me or not..."
Before "I" could even be uttered, Pei Ling gritted his teeth and let out a soft laugh, his arm tightening as he hauled her upward.
Before they even touched the ground, Pei Ling pulled her slender waist to protect her in his arms, his long leg kicking out to knock the black-clad men who had come to intercept them to the ground.
The Bodyguard Pei Li, who was following closely behind, took care of two of the black-clad men in one fluid motion.
"Th-thank you, Second Master Pei, I can stand on my own."
Pei Ling lowered his eyes to look at the pale, trembling Zhu Yuan in his arms, raised an eyebrow, and released her with an expressionless face.
But the moment he let go, Zhu Yuan lost her strength and collapsed toward the ground.
Pei Ling clicked his tongue impatiently, scooped her up by the waist to hold her in his arms, and signaled Pei Li with his eyes to pick up the coat on the ground.
"Second Master, the clothes are all wet." Pei Li walked over, carrying Zhu Yuan's coat.
As he spoke, he prepared to take off his own jacket for Zhu Yuan, "If Miss Zhu doesn't mind..."
But before he could finish his sentence, Pei Ling, holding Zhu Yuan with one arm, used his other hand to take off his own trench coat.
Before wrapping it around Zhu Yuan, he frowned, brought the coat close to his nose to sniff it, and only then draped it over her.
Zhu Yuan was still trapped in a state of panic and did not notice these details.
But there was no time to worry about that now; her clothes had been torn out of shape, and it was too cold with the snow falling.
She clutched the coat tightly, her pale lips trembling a few times, "Thank you."
It took her several seconds to barely calm down.
Her eyes gradually turned red.
She had almost thought she was going to lose her life here today.
Pei Ling stared into her eyes, feeling irritated at the sight of her about to cry, "Didn't I save you? What are you still afraid of?"
Zhu Yuan couldn't be bothered to explain to people like them, who didn't fear death, what lingering fear was.
But before she could ask Pei Ling how he came to be here, she heard Pei Li say with a grim expression: "Second Master, someone is coming up, and they aren't from the Sheng Family!"
"They're like ghosts that won't go away!"
Pei Ling glanced at Zhu Yuan, who clearly hadn't yet pulled herself out of the lingering fear, let out a cold snort, swept her up horizontally into his arms, and strode into the hallway.
This was an older office building; the elevator had been added during a later renovation and was located on the side of the building. Pei Ling carried Zhu Yuan into the elevator, but chaotic footsteps could be heard from the other side of the hallway, closing in on them.
The elevator doors opened, and Pei Li pressed the close button, "Second Master, I will hold them off. You take Miss Zhu and go. Our people will be here to support me soon; you don't need to worry."
"I'm not worried. Save your own life." Pei Ling's expression was cold and dark.
They reached the first floor in no time.
As soon as the elevator doors opened, Zhu Yuan looked out from Pei Ling's arms and saw a group of bodyguards in black rushing in from the main entrance.
With so many people, the Dong Family's bodyguards had likely been dispatched in full force.
Driven by the pain of losing his daughter, Dong Mingchang no longer cared about anything.
"I can run!" Zhu Yuan clutched the coat on her body. After being set down by Pei Ling, she was grabbed by the hand and pulled toward the side exit.
"They're over there!"
The Dong Family's bodyguards spotted them.
They rushed out of the side exit and ran around the corner, where a black off-road vehicle was parked.
Pei Ling let go of Zhu Yuan's hand, "Get in!"
Zhu Yuan hurriedly pulled open the car door and sat inside.
With two loud bangs of the doors slamming shut, the Dong Family's bodyguards had already reached the car. Pei Ling didn't even wait for Zhu Yuan to fasten her seatbelt before starting the car; the vehicle swerved, slamming directly into the blocking Dong Family bodyguards.
Having witnessed Pei Ling's speed, Zhu Yuan instinctively gripped the handle on the car door.
"Are you afraid?" the man's cold, slightly mocking voice came through.
Zhu Yuan swallowed, gasping for air, "Thinking that I could drag you down with me, I'm not as afraid anymore."
Pei Ling's gaze was sharp; he turned his head to look at her face and then sneered, "If Sheng Yu knew you wanted to die with me like this, what would he do?"
The name "Sheng Yu" flashed through Zhu Yuan's heart; she gripped her fingers tightly, but what her mind instinctively thought of wasn't whether he would be angry, but rather...
Just then, the screeching sound of tires rubbing against the ground erupted one after another.
Five black sedans came speeding from directly in front and from both sides.
They forced Pei Ling's car to a stop!
Pei Ling slammed on the brakes, a cold, bloodthirsty glint flashing in his eyes. He gritted his back teeth and laughed lowly, "Courting death."
A cold, murderous intent spread through the car cabin.
Zhu Yuan was startled, and suddenly her ears were blocked by something.
The Qingxin Mantra flowed into her ears.
It was Pei Ling's earphones!
She looked up and met Pei Ling's deep brown eyes.
Pei Ling withdrew the hand he had used to put the earphones on her, his expression grim and terrifying. With her in his hands, they dared to chase after them without regard for their own lives—did they really think he hadn't gone on a killing spree in a long time?
"Lock the doors. Don't open them for anyone but me."
He pulled a steel pipe from under the seat and stepped out with his long legs. The moment he slammed the door shut behind him, he heard the sound of the central locking system engaging inside.
Without even a second of hesitation.
Pei Ling laughed in anger; when he saw the bodyguards stepping out of the cars blocking his path, the smile on his lips froze into ice.
Zhu Yuan watched nervously from inside the car as Pei Ling faced the crowd alone.
He was highly skilled and tall; no one could get close to him.
Watching his movements, which were clean and decisive, with every strike aimed directly at his opponent's vital points, his methods were ruthless—not like the skills learned from ordinary combat training.
Clenching her fingers into her palms, Zhu Yuan lowered her head and took a breath. The car keys were in the ignition; she could drive away while Pei Ling was dealing with those people, but that would be too heartless, and she wasn't truly an ingrate.
In the past, Pei Ling had tricked her, but today he had also saved her.
She looked back in a panic and discovered that the people who had been chasing them at the office building had caught up; with more and more cars approaching from this direction, even if Pei Ling could fight a hundred men alone, he would be unable to retreat unscathed.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of a gunshot from outside the car, and she froze completely—it had come from Pei Ling's direction!
Pei Ling kicked the hand of the opponent holding the gun, and as the gun fell, he reached out and caught it.
The sounds of firearms rang out all around him.
Pei Ling swept his icy gaze toward them, and suddenly, the roar of an engine tore through the air.
Zhu Yuan slammed her foot on the accelerator and drove the car straight forward, swinging the car body to knock aside several men in black, then quickly reversed, knocking away the men in black who had swarmed around them.
She shouted aloud, "Get in!"
Pei Ling's expression tightened as he pulled open the car door and got in.
"Bang! Bang!" Bullets flew in and struck the car door, sending out bright sparks.
Zhu Yuan floored the accelerator and shouted "Damn it," which actually made Pei Ling laugh in spite of his anger.
"Are you even a woman?"
Zhu Yuan's hands were shaking as she gripped the steering wheel; did he still have the heart to tease her about whether she was a woman?
But suddenly, she smelled a hint of blood permeating the interior of the car.
