Chapter 144: A Sense of Security That Permeates the Bones and Blood

~9 min read 1,607 words

Zhu Yuan's expression changed, "You're hurt?"

"Who said I was hurt?" Pei Ling looked at her with a cold face, at her furrowed brows and the worry faintly showing on her face.

What kind of expression was that?

Zhu Yuan focused on driving, glancing at the rearview mirror from time to time; those people were in hot pursuit, determined to take her life, so she gritted her teeth and gripped the steering wheel, "I can even smell the blood."

Pei Ling tugged at his left sleeve, where a bullet had torn a bloody hole in the black fabric.

"A minor injury," he said indifferently.

But the increasingly thick scent of blood spread through the car, making Zhu Yuan feel dizzy; she didn't believe Pei Ling at all when he said it was a minor injury.

However, the cars behind them were chasing them relentlessly, and she had no way to drive toward the hospital.

Amidst the falling snow, the distance between the black SUV Zhu Yuan was driving and those cars gradually closed.

Pei Ling glanced at the rearview mirror, "Do you even know how to drive?"

"Shut up! Don't distract me." Zhu Yuan had her heart and soul set on driving; even if the King of Heaven himself came to sit in the passenger seat today, he would have to keep his mouth shut.

Pei Ling stared at her face with a livid expression, but inexplicably, he shut his mouth.

This woman, she would be afraid of death; after being rescued from the line of death, she had been so scared her legs went weak.

Yet, when there was still a glimmer of hope, she would muster all her strength to desperately fight her way out of the encirclement.

The fact that she had driven over to meet him just now was beyond his expectations.

Watching her like this, Pei Ling's Adam's apple bobbed involuntarily.

He abruptly shifted his gaze, looked at the rearview mirror, paused, and sneered: "No need to drive anymore."

Zhu Yuan was puzzled, then suddenly saw those cars that had been chasing them relentlessly being intercepted.

Immediately after, a line of cars caught up from behind, taking less than a minute.

For some reason, even though she couldn't see the people inside the cars, the moment Zhu Yuan recognized the first vehicle, she felt a strong sense of stability in her heart.

The black sedan cut through the wind and snow like lightning, stopping horizontally in front of Zhu Yuan's car.

Before the car had even come to a complete stop, the door opened from the inside, and a man radiating coldness stepped out; the cold wind blew the hem of his black overcoat as he strode over with long legs.

His bottomless black eyes looked at the woman in the car who hadn't yet reacted.

Zhu Yuan seemed unable to hear any sound, only seeing the man's lips move, "Open the door."

Her hand was a second faster than her brain, unlocking the car door.

The next second, the man pulled the door open, grabbed her arm to pull her out of the car, and pulled her forcefully into his embrace!

Caught off guard, she fell into a warm, firm chest; Zhu Yuan's whole body went stiff and numb, her scalp felt like it was being continuously electrocuted, her mind went blank, leaving only the instinct to breathe, the gasping of one who had survived a disaster.

White snow fell softly onto their shoulders.

Neither of them spoke.

Pei Ling in the passenger seat swept his gaze like a knife toward Sheng Yu; Sheng Yu raised his eyes to look over, his gaze lingering on the black sleeve for a moment, then he said coldly: "Situ, take Second Master Pei to the hospital."

"Yes, Young Master Yu."

Zhu Yuan, in Sheng Yu's arms, heard this and subconsciously turned her head to see where exactly Pei Ling was hurt.

She had been fully focused on driving just now and hadn't dared to be distracted to look.

However, Sheng Yu held the back of her head to prevent her from turning, forcefully turning her head back and pressing it against his chest; he glanced at the clothes she was wearing, his brows slightly furrowed.

He took off his own overcoat, unbuttoned her outer garment, and as Pei Ling stood up, he threw the coat to Situ, "Put this on Second Master Pei, don't let him freeze to death."

Pei Ling looked back and saw Sheng Yu forcefully covering Zhu Yuan's head with the overcoat, then pulling the two sleeves up and tying them in a knot in the middle.

Only Zhu Yuan's exquisite little face was exposed, looking like a pretty little seal.

Pei Ling sneered, "No need for the trouble, the Pei Family Bank is just ahead."

Zhu Yuan finally broke free from Sheng Yu's restraint, looked back and saw the bloody hole in Pei Ling's left arm, gasped, and immediately realized it was a gunshot wound, "You need to go to the hospital to have the bullet removed."

"Why go to a hospital for something that can be dug out with a knife?" A mocking curve played on Pei Ling's lips.

He said it so lightly, as if it were truly the minor injury he claimed it to be.

"I'll go with you..." Before Zhu Yuan could finish her sentence, Sheng Yu covered her mouth with his hand, looked at Pei Ling, and said slowly: "I'll help you dig it out."

"You're trying to take my life, aren't you?" Pei Ling saw a strong sense of possessiveness in his murderous gaze.

If Zhu Yuan had finished her sentence just now, Sheng Yu really might have taken a knife to dig the bullet out of his arm and then taken his life.

"Can you be more mature? This is a matter of life and death, go to the hospital," Zhu Yuan said, unable to bear it any longer.

This sentence wasn't directed at anyone in particular, but it included both of the big shots who could stir up wind and rain in Jingdu City.

In the end, the motorcade went in a grand manner to the hospital under Sheng Yu's name; Qiao Mai was the director of the hospital.

Before the doctor could remove the bullet for Pei Ling, "Second Master Pei, we need to give you an anesthetic first."

Pei Ling didn't take off his clothes, but instead tore off the sleeve that had been shot through, not even blinking, "No need."

Outside the door, Zhu Yuan turned to walk toward the elevator, but Sheng Yu stopped her, looking down at her face, "The medical fees have already been paid."

Zhu Yuan was stunned, "How did you kno..."

"You insisted on him coming to the hospital because you didn't want to owe him a favor, isn't that right?" Sheng Yu's black eyes were heavy with shadows.

Zhu Yuan nodded without hesitation; that was indeed what she had been thinking.

No matter what, Pei Ling had saved her today and was injured because of her.

Because Pei Ling didn't take anesthesia, the time to remove the bullet was shortened significantly; he didn't make a sound the entire time, and the doctor almost suspected he had no pain nerves.

Pei Ling walked out wearing a trench coat; his face lacked color, but because his skin tone wasn't fair, it didn't make him look haggard.

He strode past Zhu Yuan with his long legs, "The matter of me making you get a rabies vaccine, we're even now."

"Thank you, truly, for today," Zhu Yuan said sincerely.

Pei Ling curled his lips in a light sneer, said nothing, and strode away with his long legs.

Suddenly, a cold voice came from behind him.

"Situ, see Second Master Pei back. He saved my woman, but we are not even."

Pei Ling hadn't felt much pain while the bullet was being removed, but Sheng Yu's words made his heart tug for no reason, though that feeling vanished in an instant.

He turned his head to look, and Sheng Yu was taking Zhu Yuan into the elevator next to them.

The doors closed quickly.

"Second Master Pei, this way please." Situ stood in front of the elevator door opposite.

Pei Ling withdrew his gaze and slowly clenched his fingers; veins snaked up from the back of his hand as he tightened the muscles in his entire arm, and beneath his trench coat, blood seeped from the gauze-wrapped wound.

The car left the hospital.

In the quiet backseat, Sheng Yu used medicinal liquid to wipe the scratches on the back of Zhu Yuan's hand, which she had accidentally sustained when she hit the rooftop railing.

Watching the bloody gashes on her fair skin, a flash of icy killing intent crossed Sheng Yu's eyes.

Zhu Yuan instinctively tried to pull her hand back, but Sheng Yu gripped it even tighter; after wiping away the dirt from the wound, he dabbed on a bit more medicinal liquid.

"Are you afraid?" the man's voice was hoarse.

Zhu Yuan's nose suddenly felt sore, and she nodded, "Afraid."

She took a deep breath, as if she had forgotten about ignoring Sheng Yu earlier, and began to talk more.

"I was just thinking, if I had died today, what would my grandfather do? So I cannot die, I cannot encounter danger again. I shouldn't have been dragged into this circle in the first place."

Sheng Yu's hand stiffened slightly, and the aura around him turned abruptly cold.

He raised his eyes to look at Zhu Yuan, his gaze deep and stern, "What do you mean?"
