Chapter 79: Professor Li's Questioning

~7 min read 1,398 words

Lu Chen nodded slightly, stood still, and watched Professor Li walk into the observation room next to the interrogation room he had just been in.

Only then did Lu Chen follow the officer upstairs.

"Bureau Chief Zhang, I am truly sorry."

As soon as Lu Chen entered the office, he lowered his posture slightly and took the initiative to step forward and shake Bureau Chief Zhang's hand.

He slipped a note into Bureau Chief Zhang's hand while doing so.

"I still have to trouble you to pay extra attention to my affairs."

"Sit down, Little Lu."

Bureau Chief Zhang stood up and sat down on the sofa with Lu Chen.

"I heard that you suffered an unprovoked disaster this time, and all the personnel related to the Nitan and the hospital have been under investigation."

Lu Chen took out a cigar case, pulled one out for himself, and handed the rest to Bureau Chief Zhang.

He tapped the cigar case as he did so.

It began to slowly preheat.

"To be honest, I am truly wronged. My subordinates—well, not exactly my subordinates."

Lu Chen took a puff of his cigar and exhaled the smoke.

"Look at the mess this has caused."

Bureau Chief Zhang opened the cigar case, pulled out a cigar, and his eyes flickered slightly.

He tucked the cigar case into his pocket.

After preheating for a while, he lit his cigar almost at the same time as Lu Chen.

"Professor Li has already told me about your situation. This matter itself is not your problem, but I would like to ask, do you have any suspects in mind?"

"Oh my, Bureau Chief Zhang, this matter actually has nothing to do with me; I only heard about it yesterday myself."

Lu Chen paused slightly, a sharp glint flashed in his eyes, and he slowly took a puff of his cigar and exhaled the smoke.

"You think about it, a gang was wiped out—who benefits the most? I am just a small businessman who just arrived in Xianggang, I haven't even sorted out the Nitan yet."

"You slippery fellow, the Nitan... the water there is too deep. If it hadn't alarmed the big shots this time, I wouldn't even want to set foot in that place."

Bureau Chief Zhang took a puff of his cigar, leaned his fat body against the back of the sofa, and a look of helplessness flashed in his eyes.

"From yesterday to today, I've seen more than just you; some of the fingers are pointing at you, you know."

"Bureau Chief Zhang, that's not right of you to say."

Lu Chen narrowed his eyes slightly and glanced at Bureau Chief Zhang inadvertently.

He took a puff of his cigar and exhaled the smoke.

"If the Nitan is so unfriendly to me, then I can choose to withdraw my capital. After all, that piece of rotten land—only after I truly got involved did I realize how much trouble it is."

Lu Chen paused and tapped his fingers lightly on the sofa armrest twice.

"That guy Wei Er actually included such a land deed in my apology gift; isn't he just trying to trap me?"

"I did hear that there were significant problems over at the Xifei Foreign Firm; the Crown must just be trying to shift the blame."

Bureau Chief Zhang looked at Lu Chen with a smile.

He sipped his coffee.

"As for me, I'm old. If I were younger, I might still have the spirit to venture out, but now, I'm just content to guard my own little patch of land and live my life."

"You are in your prime; I'm sure taking the next step up is only a matter of these next two years."

Lu Chen slowly took a puff of his cigar, his fingers paused slightly, and after a moment, he spoke.

"If you visit my Uncle Li more often, who knows, perhaps the path ahead won't be far off?"

"Isn't the Nitan Project also a resource for you?"

Lu Chen smiled, chatted with Bureau Chief Zhang for a while longer, and then took his leave.

After returning to the car, Professor Li did not go back first, but instead closed his eyes to rest in the back seat.

"Old Zhang must have used you to put forward some excessive demands, right?"

Professor Li slowly opened his eyes and swept a sharp gaze over Lu Chen.

"Uncle Li, it's just a blank check. If Bureau Chief Zhang has the ability, he will naturally move up; if he doesn't, even if you help him, what good would it do?"

Lu Chen smiled and spoke softly.

He took a new cigar case out of his pocket and respectfully handed it to Professor Li.

"You brat, in the future, you are not allowed to use my name to make reckless promises. As for Bureau Chief Zhang, let it be; if he wants to visit, then see him."

Professor Li looked at Lu Chen deeply and put the cigar away.

"Come to think of it, I haven't been to your place to look around yet; it just so happens I have some time today."

"I would be honored. By the way, Uncle Li, let me register as a student at your university; come to think of it, I don't even have a college degree."

Lu Chen agreed with a grin.

The car slowly changed direction.

"Hmph, you slippery fellow, you even want to tarnish my academic reputation. You can enroll, but whether you can graduate depends on yourself."

Professor Li pointed at Lu Chen, took a puff of his cigar, and then spoke.

"Once you graduate, I can introduce you to some high court judges; many of them are my students and colleagues."

Lu Chen looked at Professor Li deeply and nodded slowly.

"I happen to be quite interested in the law, so I will be troubling you in the future."

The car slowly came to a stop. Lu Chen got out first; although his movements were not as standard as a butler's, they still showed sufficient sincerity.

"Welcome to the Zhuangyuan, Uncle Li."

Lu Chen said with a grin.

"You kid only know how to clown around."

Professor Li smiled, straightened his suit, and reached out to lightly tap Lu Chen.

"Come, take me to see your kingdom, hahaha."

"You are teasing me again, sir. Please."

Lu Chen reached out to guide Professor Li as they strolled through the garden.

Seeing the wall that had just been demolished, he frowned.

Professor Li did not ask, but instead stepped over it lightly.

"You are really running your home like a company."

"You hit the nail on the head, sir. As a single man, I might as well find something to keep myself busy."

Lu Chen nodded with a chuckle and explained his future ideas to Professor Li.

Anyway, once the Zhuangyuan was bought, he could decide how to develop it himself.

It just wasn't the right time yet.

"How about this: in a few days, there is a gathering of young ladies from the upper circles of Xianggang. Would you like to attend?"

Professor Li nodded slightly, and after a long while, he looked around to make sure no one was there before he spoke.

"Start a family sooner, so that an old fellow like me can hold a grandchild sooner."

"Why are you doing this too, sir? Last time, Elder Sun even intended to introduce Luosha to me, it was simply..."

Lu Chen offered Professor Li a 555 cigarette, his eyes filled with a hint of helplessness.

He spread his hands before lighting it for Professor Li.

He lit one for himself as well.

"Please stop teasing me, sir. I haven't even established a firm footing in Xianggang yet, and you're already urging me. Aren't you afraid I might run off?"

After walking around a bit more, he returned to the study with Lu Chen.

Lu Chen respectfully poured clear tea for Professor Li, then sat at the lower seat, rather than in the main seat.

"Tell me, what exactly is going on?"

Professor Li slowly lit a Cigar, took a puff, leaned back slightly into the sofa, and crossed his legs.

His sharp gaze looked through the smoke at Lu Chen.

Lu Chen's hand holding the Cigar paused, he sat up slightly, and looked up to respond to Professor Li.
