Chapter 91: Work Invitation

~7 min read 1,232 words

"Robert didn't come with you?" Catherine asked.

Since divorcing André De Witt in 1982, Robert Wolders, a Dutch actor seven years her junior, had become her certified 'life partner'.

They simply never stepped into the marriage hall again, choosing instead to relate as something more than friends.

Lady He Ben would bring this younger boyfriend to many public events. The two had even met with then-US President Reagan together.

In contrast, Catherine had been single since her divorce in 1934, with no children of her own. But that didn't mean she didn't care about her friend's love life, so she asked.

Lady He Ben said helplessly, "Robert isn't very interested in going to Africa for charity work, so he really didn't want to come this time. I wasn't willing to force him."

"Hmph, men. They're eager to go to bars or hotels, but asking them to accompany you is like asking for their lives." Catherine fired off a map-bomb.

Henry, sitting in the driver's seat, helplessly said to the two in the back, "Hello, ladies, I'm driving very obediently; I shouldn't be criticized like this. I'm injured, you know."

"Ha, good boy, just drive properly. And no matter what you hear, exclude yourself from it. Would that make you feel a bit better?"

Catherine's words remained sharp, leaving Henry quite depressed.

Lady He Ben, however, defused the situation, saying, "Henry, how long have you been driving? It's very smooth."

Henry answered honestly, "I've had my driver's license for about half a year. Before that, I was in places like Alaska, no-man's-lands. I'd say I have a talent for driving."

All three sentences were the truth; it was just that many circumstances weren't mentioned, but that was enough for others to fill in the blanks.

Moreover, regarding driving skill, actually riding in the car makes it clearest; driving experience is just for reference. Whether Lady He Ben or Catherine, both had ridden with old drivers whose skills were terrible.

Some people are like they can't press the accelerator; they can't maintain a steady speed, but instead press and release intermittently, making the car speed rise and fall like a wave. Even driving in a straight line can make people feel carsick.

Catherine chimed in from the side, "Little Henry's driving skills are quite good. At least driving this old car, he didn't bump this old lady up enough to vomit my breakfast."

Henry put on an innocent expression and said, "Catherine, I did ask you if I should go rent a car to drive."

"Ha, don't worry, good boy, no one is disdainful of your old car."

A third-generation DeVille, 1965 model, was classified as a large luxury car in Cadillac's lineup. Although not comparable to top-tier luxury cars like Bentley or Rolls-Royce, for some Hollywood minor stars, this model was impressive enough back then.

Two beauties of twilight had seen every kind of spectacle. At this age, they had reached a state of non-contention and non-desire. Of course, they wouldn't disdain what car they were sitting in; safety and comfort were far more important.

And since knowing he would drive this Cadillac to pick up these two distinguished guests, Henry had thoroughly cleaned the interior, almost to the point of restoration and refurbishment.

Especially in places like odors and crevices that ordinary people find hard to notice, the Kryptonian had cleaned it once according to his own standards. The only thing missing was disassembling most of the car for detailed maintenance.

As for the car's performance, the previous owner of the Cadillac had done quite well; there were no bad habits in daily driving, so the car had no major faults. This was also a major reason Henry agreed to take it over in the first place.

That is to say, the only place this car could be faulted was probably that the shell's paint wasn't bright enough. Although it had been waxed, there was still a gap compared to a new car.

But for two self-proclaimed faded twilight superstars, this shortcoming was just right. At their age, they didn't want to relive memories of playing hide-and-seek with paparazzi and reporters.

"Oh, by the way." Lady He Ben pulled a business card from her handbag and handed it forward, asking at the same time, "Henry, do you know this address?"

Henry took the business card and glanced at it in a spare moment. "Luo Ni Insurance Broker Company?"

Although insurance brokers also sell insurance, this profession doesn't stand on the insurance company's side, but rather on the policyholder's side to craft a suitable insurance plan for them.

Brokers might cooperate with multiple insurance companies and won't just push products from a single insurance company.

Also, because brokers stand on the policyholder's side, they offer some extra services, allowing policyholders to meet the prerequisites for certain insurance products to achieve maximum safety coverage and reduce premiums.

The situation Lady He Ben described indeed matched this common sense. She said, "Luo Ni told me that if I want to purchase insurance for this trip to Somalia in Africa, I must bring a security team that meets the requirements."

"This time, Luo Ni helped me contact a security team. Coming to Los Angeles also has the purpose of meeting this team. If it's suitable, we will sign a contract."

"A security team, huh." Henry's voice carried a hint of disappointment.

Both twilight beauties were people with hearts as fine as hair; their skill at reading expressions and observing situations had been practiced to perfection. Without Henry saying anything, they understood the young man's tone.

Lady He Ben chuckled, "Don't worry, Henry. From the moment I saw you, this job belonged to you. Unless you don't want it."

Henry, beaming with joy, said excitedly, "How could I possibly refuse such an opportunity? Serving Lady He Ben is the honor of my lifetime."

His attitude fully revealed his sycophantic nature. Even the amount of sycophancy he hadn't done before crossing over, he made up for in this life all at once.

But to say Henry had no self-awareness isn't entirely true. He was just singing various doggerel rhymes in his heart like 'A youth knows not the goodness of an auntie; only after tasting does one know the fragrance of soft rice'.

Lady He Ben didn't feel happy because Henry agreed at once; instead, she said seriously, "But this job isn't easy, little Henry. I'd say I'm not hiring a driver so much as a personal assistant."

"The most important part of this job is following me around the world, although most of the time will be in Europe. Anton, who used to follow me, has worked for me since my days filming in Hollywood."

"But after I became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1988, traveling everywhere for visits and attending charity events, he became somewhat overwhelmed and chose to retire. This is why I need a new assistant."

"I must make it clear to you; this isn't simply about driving. How difficult it is, well, it shouldn't be too hard. But the matters are very tedious; mainly, I need you to accompany this old lady everywhere. Are you still willing?"

"Of course I am, ma'am. I have a bit of a talent for languages; maybe I can help quite a bit." In one short sentence, Henry repeated himself in French, Dutch, and German.
