Chapter 138: The Control Problem of the Transformed Beast

~7 min read 1,334 words

Allen transformed out a Blade Leopard, then controlled it as it paced back and forth in the washroom. Actually, at this point the Blade Leopard's movement logic was still not quite perfect — it could only be said to walk fairly steadily on flat ground, but on complex terrain it was hard to say.

So it still needed time to be polished.

The silver-white mithril armor on the Blade Leopard looked very mysterious under the dim lamplight; the battering ram on its head and the blades on its tail radiated a dangerous gleam. Its body was very well-proportioned and powerful, with thick pads under its feet and a metallic shine between its claws — clearly a very dangerous-looking creature.

Although many parts of its body had been replaced with mithril, the Blade Leopard's overall weight hadn't increased much, so its speed remained very fast, while its defense had been greatly enhanced.

Allen was also pleasantly surprised to discover that the mithril armor's magical defense was quite decent — it could withstand two of Allen's Petrification Spells, far exceeding his expectations.

Allen returned contentedly to the Mind Room within his diary and continued adjusting the Blade Leopard's behavioral logic.

And Yordel, who had rarely appeared recently, also showed up in the Mind Room.

"It looks like your research has made a breakthrough! Congratulations!" Yordel said calmly to Allen.

Yordel's words were very gratifying to Allen. His research had achieved such a big breakthrough, but he could only keep it secret, because these breakthroughs were all his trump cards.

Fortunately, there was still Yordel with whom he could share his joy.

"Yes! Your contribution is in here too. Thanks to your Mind Room, otherwise I don't know when I would have been able to achieve a breakthrough! So I must also thank you for your help." Allen was in a particularly good mood.

"You're welcome. This is the agreement between us — you provide me with news from the outside world, and I provide you with the Mind Room. We each take what we need, that's all." Yordel still wore that calm expression.

Although Yordel had said so, Allen still felt that the two of them were not contributing equally.

"I see the leopard you've transformed out has silver armor and sharp blades — are you planning to use this kind of leopard for combat?" Yordel continued to throw out his questions.

This topic scratched Allen's itch, and he excitedly introduced to Yordel the functions of the various designs he had put on the Blade Leopard, expecting to once again harvest Yordel's exclamations of admiration.

But he noticed Yordel furrowing his brow.

"If you had told me from the start that you were researching the Transformation Spell for combat, then I would have stopped you from the very beginning." Yordel softly uttered words that greatly surprised Allen.

This also successfully piqued Allen's interest. "Why is that?" Allen asked with great interest.

"Because the direction you've chosen is wrong." Yordel continued to deliver his views. "Using the Transformation Spell in combat has always had only one direction — transforming out various things to block incoming spells."

"The direction you've chosen now has been tested by countless wizards, but the biggest problem they faced wasn't that the transformed animals were too fragile — it was that they had to constantly split their attention to control these animals in combat." Yordel continued.

Yordel's words plunged Allen into thought, because control was indeed a very big problem.

Controlling a transformed beast's movements was a rather troublesome matter, because transformed beasts had no intelligence at all; wizards could only give them simple commands.

"Real combat isn't like the one-on-one duels you had a while ago. Real combat is far more complicated. If you split your focus in battle to control your so-called transformed beast, you won't even know how you died." Yordel's words weren't pleasant to hear.

But Allen felt they were very pertinent.

"How do you know all this? After all, the memories you possess only go up to age 18 — did you go through many battles before you turned 18?" Allen seemed to have thought of something.

"I don't know either. I just somehow know these things..." Yordel said, somewhat at a loss.

Allen also fell silent for a moment.

"Then has your research made any progress? I feel that, given your track record before age 18,

you couldn't possibly be unknown in modern history..." Allen broke the silence.

Yordel's expression finally changed. He looked at Allen with a complicated look and said, "I don't know either. I feel that my original body likely died not long after graduation..."

"Or died in obscurity during the Wizard Wars. You have to know that before the Dark Lord's rise, many wizards disappeared for no apparent reason. In short, it was a chaotic era..." Yordel added softly.

Allen was momentarily at a loss for words on this topic.

"I'll gather more materials on the Wizard Wars for you." Allen comforted him softly.

Yordel stood up, gave Allen a slight nod of thanks, and then disappeared from the Mind Room.

Allen sat alone in the Mind Room, watching the various memories drifting through the sky, and for a moment lost the desire to continue optimizing the Blade Leopard.

His exchanges with Yordel had been ongoing continuously. Yordel was very interested in things happening in the modern era, especially the First Wizard War.

But this was understandable — the Wizard Wars were indeed the most striking historical events of the past twenty years.

Additionally, Yordel was also very interested in Harry; he asked many extra questions about Harry, not limited to his life and studies.

Allen naturally picked out what he could say and shared a bit.

Later Yordel stopped asking, because they had already returned to Hogwarts. Yordel had a certain ability to sense the outside world, so once at Hogwarts he would probably go observe Harry on his own...

Allen didn't find this strange — anyone would be interested in the Chosen One; Allen himself had gone through such a phase.

He guessed Yordel would, just as he once had, discover that Harry was just a very ordinary little wizard whose grades weren't that great either, and might then lose interest in Harry.

Thinking of this, Allen left the Mind Room, transformed out another Blade Leopard, established a link with it, and began practicing how to control the Blade Leopard.

The Blade Leopard was still quite agile when controlled in real time, but the problem Yordel had mentioned did indeed exist.

Moreover, Allen also discovered a very serious problem: he didn't have the Blade Leopard's point of view. All his control was based on his own visual observation.

And as soon as the Blade Leopard left Allen's field of vision, he had no way to issue correct commands based on the situation around the Blade Leopard, and the Blade Leopard would only execute his last command.

For example, if Allen's command to the Blade Leopard was to attack someone, when both the Blade Leopard and that person left Allen's field of vision, the Blade Leopard would continue to attack that person, but its movements would also become stiff.

Just like the old RC model airplanes and today's drones.

Old RC model airplanes had no cameras, so the controller only dared to let the model fly within his line of sight.

But today's drones have cameras and image transmission systems, so the controller dares to fly the drone beyond his line of sight, because he can see the situation around the drone through the camera and image transmission system.

So for this problem, Allen had no good solution for the moment.

Nevertheless, the appearance of the Blade Leopard had greatly enhanced his combat power. At the Blade Leopard's speed, ordinary wizards simply couldn't react in time at close range.

The shortcoming in control would only become apparent in higher-level combat.
