Chapter 165: The Hypothesis of Modifying Memories

~7 min read 1,207 words

The green flames surged forward violently; the entire flame was green, yet not a simple green—the core of the flame column was pure white, still blindingly bright even in daylight, as the flames shot out with tremendous force for 30 feet...

The green flames were extremely hot; although Allen stood one meter away from the flames, he still felt his exposed skin being scorched, and he even smelled the charred scent of his hair and eyebrows...

The young wizards around him were also forced to keep retreating due to the intense heat...

This spurt ended quickly, lasting about 10 seconds, because the liquid in the sac beneath his neck was soon exhausted; the sac became shriveled, and without the support of the magical secretion, the spouting flames could no longer be sustained and faded away.

Allen stopped, breathing fresh air in great gasps; although the spurt lasted only a brief 10 seconds, he still felt a sense of oxygen deprivation, felt a burning sensation in his mouth, and upon closer inspection, detected a sulfur taste...

He knew he had succeeded; although this spurt had no target and the destructive effect of the flames could not be directly observed, the temperature and the sheer momentum indicated the power was certainly considerable.

He then felt the shriveled sac on his neck begin refilling with liquid; he carefully estimated that fully replenishing these sacs would take about 10 minutes...

The young wizards around him finally snapped out of their shock; they all cheered simultaneously, and their gazes toward Allen had changed, as if they were looking at a human T-rex...

They were all stunned by the flames Allen had spewed; although they had estimated the power of his flame spurt, the force of this breath still exceeded their imagination, and this was the first time they had seen a wizard produce such powerful flames.

They loudly demanded that Allen spurt again, but Allen was already unable to continue...

"The sacs are still too small! They don't store much liquid, so I can only spurt for about 10 seconds at a time, then have to wait 10 minutes; it's a bit unsatisfying," Allen thought silently, touching the sacs.

"The liquid I stored has been completely spewed out; I estimate I'll have to wait an hour before I can spurt again!" Allen suddenly realized he could speak and hurriedly explained to the audience, though he still kept a little reserve.

The audience let out sounds of disappointment, but this single spurt had already satisfied much of their curiosity.

Since it was breakfast time, and classes would begin after breakfast, they gradually dispersed...

Harry, Ron, and Hermione remained; they had just been squeezed by the crowd and hadn't had a chance to speak with Allen.

"Wow, you look really cool today!" Ron said excitedly.

"Cool what? This sac is really ugly." They said while touching the smooth surface of the sac.

"But the flames you spewed are definitely awesome!" Harry said somewhat enviously.

"Do you feel anything special right now?" Hermione asked with concern.

"Nothing special, just that I feel extremely hungry; it seems the magical secretions produced by the glands are not only generated through magical power but also consume energy within the body," Allen said, looking somewhat exhausted.

"Then do you feel you can control it now?" That was Professor McGonagall's voice.

"Yes, I feel I can now skillfully control the glands; the control process was simpler than I imagined. Thank you and Madam Pomfrey for your care these past two days..." Allen said gratefully.

"You're welcome, Mr. Finis; if you have any questions, feel free to come to me anytime," Madam Pomfrey said patiently.

Professor McGonagall, however, stared sternly at Allen and warned him, "Mr. Finis, you must control your urge to spurt today and not bring danger to yourself or others."

Allen hurriedly assured Professor McGonagall.

Then Professor McGonagall and Madam Pomfrey left the scene, returning to Hogwarts Castle; Professor Dumbledore had also disappeared at some unknown time.

"Let's go too; what are you still waiting for?" Hermione suggested.

"I'm waiting for the magical secretions in the sacs to accumulate so I can test the power of the dragon breath again."

So they waited a while longer until Allen's sacs were filled with magical secretions.

This time, Allen found a lone withered tree; he skillfully spewed green flames, which splashed onto the tree trunk and quickly burned a huge black hole into it.

Allen was very satisfied with the power of the dragon breath; its power surpassed any magical flame he knew.

He gradually grew to enjoy the sensation of spewing flames; the feeling of gradually taming such wild power was extremely gratifying.

But after returning to reality, he began to have a headache again...

When facing the Basilisk, he must transform to produce the Phoenix's eyes.

Although the dragon's breath is useful, he cannot possibly transform both the Phoenix's eyes and the glands used by the dragon for spitting on that same day!

Although he could use his subconscious to influence the transformation result and had previously used this ability to transform into a left claw and right hoof, that time he only focused his thoughts on transforming his hands; to transform both the Phoenix's eyes and the dragon's spitting glands simultaneously, he would need to hold both transformation results in his mind at once, and he even suspected that doing so might cause the dragon gland's nozzle to appear directly in his eyes...

Instantly, he felt the breath ability had become useless again, at least offering no help for his current situation.

In fact, Allen had recently been speculating about his own talent.

What influences his ability to affect the transformation talent once a week?

Who times this once-a-week cycle? Is it the Will of the World, or is it himself?

Just as when we add a schedule to our phone set for seven days later; if we change the phone's local time to seven days later, the reminder for that schedule will appear.

Is his once-a-week ability to affect the transformation talent timed in the same way?

And Allen happened to have mastered a method to modify the "local time."

To this day, Allen has mastered the method of using Zhong De Mo Fa to modify his own memories, but he dares not use this method recklessly because memory is a very mysterious and complex thing; he fears that altering his own memories could bring him great confusion.

And would modifying his own memory to change his perception of time be equivalent to modifying the "local time"?

If he modifies his memory, changing his perception of time to one week later, will his ability to transform at a specific time be restored?

Of course, this is currently only a hypothesis; because Zhong De Mo Fa is too mysterious, he cannot recklessly attempt it; he wants to wait until he has a deeper mastery of Zhong De Mo Fa before trying this hypothesis.

Anyway, there is no rush now; he still has three months; perhaps during this time he can come up with other solutions and won't need to take the path of modifying memories...
