Chapter 191: Cheng Wan, You Are Free

~8 min read 1,443 words

Chu Li carried Cheng Wan back to the bed.

She still did not struggle.

He kissed the corner of her lips, but she remained expressionless.

Panic surged within Chu Li's heart.

Chu Li could not help but hold Cheng Wan tightly in his arms, his thin lips pressed against her ear, calling her name incessantly.

"Wanwan, look at me."

"Wanwan, please don't scare me, okay?"

Cheng Wan said nothing, her gaze fixed on a spot not far away, as if devoid of anxiety, completely rippleless.

Chu Li carefully touched her face, then went to hold her hand; her fingertips were ice-cold.

He took out his phone to call Assistant Wu, asking him to arrange for a doctor to come over.

Assistant Wu asked, "What kind of doctor should I arrange?"

"Arrange... a psychiatrist. No, have him wait; we are coming over."

Chu Li grabbed a coat to wrap Cheng Wan in and hurried downstairs.

A servant happened to walk by and only saw that under the coat, the Madam's face was exceptionally pale, her eyes devoid of any luster, as if she were suffering from some grave illness.

Chu Li rushed to the Yiyuan at lightning speed, and Assistant Wu was already waiting.

"Doctor Lin is already here."

Chu Li carried Cheng Wan upstairs.

Seeing Cheng Wan's state, Doctor Lin's expression grew a bit more serious.

"Has the Madam suffered a tremendous blow?"

Her appearance could be completely described as a heart turned to ash.

Chu Li pressed his lips together, his entire body tense.

Assistant Wu spoke in a low voice about what had happened recently.

Doctor Lin understood, "The Madam is pregnant, so it is not good to use medication. We can only rely on companionship to help her slowly untie the knot in her heart; this person is best someone she is close to and trusts."

Chu Li felt a lump in his throat—someone she is close to and trusts.

That was definitely not him.

Cheng Wan loathed him; the last thing she probably wanted was his companionship.

He did not want such an outcome.

"Is there no other way?" he asked.

Doctor Lin thought for a moment, "This is the best way. There is one more point that requires special attention: in the Madam's condition, it is very easy to develop depression, and at that point, she might harm herself."

Chu Li was silent.

Depression?

Returning to Beicheng Villa, Chu Li stayed by Cheng Wan's side every step of the way, but no matter how he spoke to her, she had no reaction, just staring blankly ahead.

Chu Li brought Qin Ping'an over, but Cheng Wan only glanced at him slightly and had no other reaction.

Qin Ping'an cried and asked, "What's wrong with Mommy? Mommy, don't ignore Ping'an."

Chu Li coaxed him and had the servant take him away.

Finally, he sat quietly by Cheng Wan's side.

He was completely helpless.

More than half an hour later, Wen Lvzhong arrived.

Qin Ping'an was worried about his mother, so he had called him.

He looked at Cheng Wan's state, his expression sinking, "What happened?"

"Lin Qingya is dead; Wanwan is overcome with grief and cannot move past it," Chu Li said in a low, pained voice.

"Lin Qingya is dead?" Wen Lvzhong was shocked, "What happened?"

Chu Li shook his head and said nothing.

Wen Lvzhong gently called Cheng Wan's name, but she had no reaction.

Her whole being was permeated with numbness and despair.

"I am taking her away," Wen Lvzhong said without hesitation.

He tried to help Cheng Wan up but was blocked by Chu Li.

Chu Li's expression was ugly.

He was unwilling to hand Cheng Wan over to Wen Lvzhong.

"Chu Li?" Wen Lvzhong frowned, "Look at Wanwan's state; she will definitely not get better staying here, and do you have a better way?"

"Let her stay here one more night; tomorrow morning, I will send her away."

Chu Li felt pain as if he were being sliced to pieces, but he had no other choice.

He could not watch Cheng Wan wither away.

After hesitating for a few seconds, Wen Lvzhong agreed.

He took Qin Ping'an away first.

Throughout the night, Chu Li barely closed his eyes; he wished time could stop at this night forever so that Cheng Wan could always stay by his side.

It was only when the sky turned a pale fish-belly white that he fell asleep out of exhaustion.

After dozing for about half an hour, he suddenly woke up in a start.

His arms were empty; Cheng Wan was gone.

"Wanwan."

Chu Li climbed out of bed, in a state of utter panic.

His gaze finally landed on the bathroom.

He didn't have time to put on his shoes and hurried over.

The door pushed open; he stumbled and nearly fell, then rushed inside.

"Wanwan."

Cheng Wan was lying on the floor, fresh blood flowing from her left wrist.

She had attempted suicide.

At eight o'clock in the morning, Cheng Wan came out of the emergency room.

Because she was sent in time, she was out of danger.

Chu Li stood in the stairwell, smoking for an hour.

He looked haggard and disheveled, with cigarette butts all around his feet.

It wasn't until the doctor called to say that Cheng Wan was out of danger.

Chu Li put his phone back into his pocket and went to the ward.

In the ward, Cheng Han was also there; he was sitting in a wheelchair, still somewhat weak.

"She... is it because of Lin Qingya?"

Chu Li didn't speak, his eyes filled with pain.

"Take her back to the Cheng Family."

As the words fell, Chu Li felt a sharp, stifling pain in his chest.

He clenched his palms, desperately restraining his emotions.

Rather than leaving Cheng Wan to Wen Lvzhong, it was better to leave her to Cheng Han.

Cheng Han's voice was hoarse, "Okay."

He knew about Lin Qingya, and he had agreed with Chu Li doing that.

They both believed that long-term pain is worse than short-term pain.

It was just that neither of them expected Cheng Wan's feelings for Lin Qingya to be so deep.

Chu Li took heavy steps to the side of the hospital bed, his fingers trembling as he stroked Cheng Wan's cheek.

Cheng Wan, you are free.

After several minutes, he finally restrained his surging emotions perfectly, and only then did he straighten his body slightly.

"Take good care of her."

His voice was also trembling.

Cheng Han nodded, "Don't worry."

The younger sister he had finally managed to find, he would naturally cherish to the bone.

Moreover, the Old Madam had already arrived, and with her here, Cheng Wan would have endless blessings in the future.

Just as he was thinking this, the ward door was pushed open.

Hurried footsteps came, followed by a gentle, kind voice, carrying a hint of anxiety.

"Xiao Han, Xiao Han, where is Wanwan?"

Chu Li stepped back, giving up the position in front of the hospital bed.

He watched the silver-haired Old Madam rush to the bedside, her hand trembling as she reached out, wanting to touch Cheng Wan's face, but fearing she might disturb her, she pulled it back.

"It's Wanwan."

Old Madam Cheng's eyes turned red.

Chu Li retreated step by step until he stood by the door.

The attachment and reluctance in his eyes were surging.

"What happened to Wanwan? Who bullied her?" Old Madam Cheng was exceptionally furious when she saw the gauze on Cheng Wan's wrist.

She had rushed back to the country after receiving the news that Cheng Huade and Cheng Han had met with an accident.

On the way, she learned that the granddaughter who had gone missing back then had been found.

She hadn't had time to investigate what had happened to her granddaughter, so she didn't know what grievances Cheng Wan had suffered.

"Grandma, let Wanwan rest," Cheng Han urged.

Old Madam Cheng quickly agreed, "Yes, let Wanwan rest, I must find the person who hurt her, I will never let them off..."

Chu Li left the room completely.

Cheng Wan had regained family members who loved and cherished her; there was no longer a place for him by her side.

Chu Li felt a wave of bitterness in his heart; for her own good, he was willing to let go.

From now on, let bridges be bridges and roads be roads.

Back in the car, he leaned against the seat back, covering his eyes with his palms; tears welled up, wetting his palms.

After several attempts to force things, it had ultimately become a delusion.
