Wang Dou, a 21st-century history teacher, inexplicably finds himself transported into the body of a lowly watchtower soldier on the northern frontier of the Ming Dynasty in the seventh year of the Chongzhen reign. Struggling to adapt to the filthy, brutal conditions of Jingbian Watchtower, he must navigate a world on the brink of collapse—where corrupt officers, desperate soldiers, and the constant threat of Mongol raids define daily life. Armed only with his modern knowledge and a pragmatic, steady temperament, Wang Dou begins to carve out a new path.

He confronts bullying comrades, seeks leave to help his impoverished family, and reconnects with his child bride, Xie Xiu Niang, all while hiding his true origins. As he learns the harsh realities of border defense and survival, Wang Dou must decide how far he will go to change his fate—and the fate of those around him—in a crumbling empire.
