When the wheels of history rolled into the seventeenth year of Chongzhen (1644), the history belonging to the Great Ming Dynasty drew to a close. There is still debate today regarding the exact time of the Ming's demise: one theory points to 1644 (the seventeenth year of Chongzhen), when Li Zicheng breached Beijing; another points to 1662 (the sixteenth year of Yongli), when the Yongli Emperor was captured. Yet, it is undeniable that ever since Zhang Juzheng passed away in 1582, the Great Ming Dynasty had been on the decline. That year was less than a century after Columbus discovered the Americas. That year, twenty-three-year-old Nurhaci picked up his steel blade and embarked on the journey to unify the Jurchen. That year, Oda Nobunaga perished at Honno-ji, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi spent years of effort to end Japan's chaotic Sengoku period. That year, the empire's edifice crumbled, and fifty-eight-year-old Zhang Juzheng passed away. A soul from five hundred years in the future descended into the body of Zhang Juzheng's fifth son, Zhang Yunxiu. Ten years later, Zhang Yunxiu declared: to prevent the British Empire from being scorched by the sun all day, this "empire on which the sun never sets" had better be the Great Ming!
